blog etiquette

so, a question - when someone comments on your blog, is the correct blog etiquette to
1) comment on your blog in response and expect them to check the post again?
2) comment in response on their blog (which would be on an unrelated post)?

thoughts?

Personally, I prefer option 1, so I check the "Email follow-up comments" box whenever I post so I know if the blogger has responded to my comments. It also makes it a lot easier for third-parties to follow the dialogue.

Generally, I find the first option more sensible, particularly if the blog post is intended to elicit protracted discussion. I tend to approach blogs in the way I approach an online message board.

The second option would be appropriate for blogs in which communication takes place in a more casual, desultory manner, as is seen on a typical Facebook Wall.

In the final analysis, of course, it comes down to personal preference. Just ask.

I would respond in 3 fashions. On the original post, on a post on the blog of the original comment, and then post a comment addressed to that person on a completely unrelated place, say...a new yorker poll for comics.
